NANTUM GRID SERVICES
GRID-INTERACTIVE EFFICIENT BUILDINGS (GEBs)
The power industry in the U.S. is going through a period of rapid change setting forth much needed grid modernization plans to ensure reliability and meet evolving customer needs. Power customers that own and operate buildings are beginning to look toward developing grid-interactive, efficient buildings (GEBs) as the new standard for high-performance buildings.
What are GEBs?
A GEB is smart, efficient, connected, and flexible – meaning energy loads can be shed, shifted and modulated to optimize energy efficiency, reduce emissions, increase occupant comfort and secure grid reliability. GEBs turn the built environment into flexible grid resources that are more valuable for building owners and grid operators alike.
EFFICIENT
Persistent low energy use minimizes demand on grid resources and infrastructure
CONNECTED
Two-way communication with flexible technologies, the grid, the occupants
SMART
Analytics supported by sensors and controls co-optimize efficiency, flexibility, and occupant preferences
FLEXIBLE
Flexible loads and distributed generation / storage can be used to reduce, shift, or modulate energy use
Nantum OS helps customers integrate components of grid-interactive, efficient buildings (GEBs) by providing a centralized command center within the building that can communicate bi-directionally with the electric grid. Our Grid Services team helps customers understand and take advantage of the benefits that Nantum OS provides for grid flexibility to meet their energy & carbon reduction goals.
Our team’s efforts include helping our customers:
Increase overall energy savings (kWh) through Nantum ECMs
Improve overall project ROI for Nantum by accessing available utility rebates
Manage their energy demand (kW) via Nantum ADM
Participate in demand response (kW) programs via Nantum ADR
Make smart energy decisions based on priorities such as emissions reduction, dollar savings, energy reduction
“Grid-interactive efficient buildings are designed to avoid the high costs and disruptions associated with peak demand and grid stress. Through clean, on-site power generation and cutting-edge efficiency measures, we can massively reduce the carbon footprint of the buildings sector."
Kelly Speakes-Backman - Acting Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy - U.S. Department Of Energy
Grid Services for Building Owners
GEBs approach energy/carbon optimization through:
Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs), reducing energy costs
Automated Demand Management (ADM), reducing demand charges
Automated Demand Response (ADR), providing utility DR incentives
The Nantum OS Grid Services team assists customers by:
Identifying utility programs with incentive opportunities for all new Nantum OS customers to increase ROI and reduce costs for implementation/installation
Optimizing energy procurement decision-making via making the case for switching rate plans and negotiating more favorable procurement rates
Maximizing charging and discharging of stored energy (chemical batteries, thermal storage, electric vehicle (EV))
Utilizing carbon accounting by tracking on-site renewable generation and integrating real-time data to optimize decision-making against priority reduction targets
“You Can’t Have Smart Cities Without Smart Buildings”
Grid Services for Utilities
Provide demand response aggregation services within an existing DR program
Provide an automated demand response (ADR) virtual top node (VTN) to develop an ADR program
Provide an ADR virtual end node (VEN) for power customers to participate in an ADR program
Increase customer satisfaction through providing smart technology incentives offerings
Increase visibility into real-time customer load profiles to assist with resource planning & customer program development
Flexible Loads are the Foundation of GEBs
GEBs utilize a network of sensors and controls to optimize flexible building loads, allowing assets to reduce energy demand (load shed) or shift energy demand (load shift) to other times of day when called upon by grid operators or when responding to real-time pricing or emissions signals. With on-site energy generation or storage systems, a GEB can modulate its energy demand as needed while maintaining a comfortable built environment for occupants and grid reliability.
How Nantum Grid Services are Defining GEBs Today
Owners and operators are beginning to invest in Behind-the-Meter distributed energy resource systems (DERs) capable of integrating with intelligent building operating systems like Nantum OS, promoting flexible and connected building loads serving as the foundation of a GEB.
Energy Efficiency and Peak Load Reduction
Nantum OS’ Algo Marketplace provides AI/ML to improve overall operational energy efficiency through SmartStart, Ramps, and Chiller Optimization, reducing energy and emissions. Nantum Automated Demand Management (ADM) forecasts peak demand and dynamically sheds load to avoid setting new peaks, saving 6-8% on demand charge billing.
Distributed Energy Resource (DER) Management
Building owners can use Nantum OS as a DER management tool to integrate on-site energy generation or storage systems with traditional building systems. Real time pricing and emissions data allows for managing and optimizing building loads for load shedding, shifting, and modulation. Nantum OS can support integration to distributed energy sources such as electric/thermal batteries, on-site solar systems, electric vehicle charging stations, and more to perform automated demand management and demand response, while maintaining occupant comfort.
For Utility Customers, Nantum OS can integrate with utility-scale DERMs platforms and provide additional behind-the-meter customer load data to enhance grid resource planning and management of utility-scale renewable energy projects.
Automated Demand Response (ADR) and Increasing DR Incentives for our Customers
Nantum OS utilizes openADR2.0 communication protocols to provide two-way communication signals with the grid. Prescriptive Data’s Customer Success team helps real estate operators develop fully automated curtailment strategies to provide reliable load shed for Demand Response programs. Traditional demand response service providers profit by taking a percentage of demand response revenue they unlock for their customers. Prescriptive Data’s approach utilizes Nantum OS’s automated demand response (ADR) capabilities to maximize incentive opportunities without taking a portion of the revenue, leading to a 15-30% increase in incentives for our customers. Prescriptive Data can enroll your building in a wide array of DR programs nationally.
Utility Automated Demand Response (ADR) Programs for C&I Customers
Utility Customers can utilize Nantum OS to create and deploy their own automated demand response (ADR) program. Electric utilities are facing ever more pressure to innovate and create demand side management (DSM) customer programs to increase grid reliability. Prescriptive Data is using openADR2.0 communication protocols for its Virtual Top Node (VTN) that allows grid operators to develop new methods and programs to manage end-use customer energy loads.
