CREs Focus on Centralizing Operational Building Data in 2020

Big data has come to real estate in a big way. Buildings around the globe are being wired with technology from the basement to the lighting rod. With so much data pouring out of buildings, landlords and managers are finding ways to utilize it. The first step is centralization.

A recent study by Facilio shows just how landlords and managers are handling all that data. This year, a 6% increase in the centralization of building data is expected. Many will turn to building data lakes. A data lake functions much like a geographic lake, with streams and rivers of data flowing into one large ‘lake.’ Once the data is centralized, it can be used to identify issues, build applications, predict maintenance, enhance sustainability and improve overall asset performance.

Using data-driven insights to optimize operations may be commonplace in many industries, but it’s still relatively new in the world of real estate. With owners and managers struggling to meet operational and sustainability goals, more and more will turn towards technology as a solution: implementing more IoT devices, sensors and gateways into their buildings. The flow of data is only increasing. The best thing a business owner can do is figure out how to leverage that data.
