Interview: Software Engineer

Gennadii Turutin is a software engineer at Prescriptive Data and focuses on data acquisition. With a background in fintech and real estate, Gennadii has evolved his technical expertise to the sustainable realm and he couldn’t be happier about being part of making a difference. He talks about how he found the position at PD, what his day is like and more!


What’s your role at PD?

I am a Software Engineer and part of the Data Acquisition Team which is responsible for creating programs that retrieve data from building sensors and generate analytics data.

How did you first hear about PD and what drew you into the sustainable technology industry?

I came across PD online. I wasn’t looking for a job specifically in sustainable tech; I was looking for an opportunity to apply my software engineering skills. Once I started working in the industry, I understood the importance of what PD is doing. It’s very motivating to know you employ coding to save the planet.

What’s the most rewarding part of working at PD?

I’d have to say the emails we get from our clients that thank us for saving them money and energy. It’s very rewarding to see the positive result of your work and its relevance in the modern world. Finally, when you tell people you work in sustainable tech, they appreciate and respect that you’re doing a critical thing.

Where do you see this industry in 5-10 years?

Our applications will be used by thousands of buildings worldwide. We’ll be offering a wide range of unique tools that monitor data, automate building operations, reduce emissions and offer our customers valuable insights into how to improve building performance.

If there is such a thing, what’s an average day at PD like?

The average day consists of close collaboration involving machine learning engineers, back-end engineers, front-end engineers, and product managers. We all get together to discuss the product and the plans for the current sprint or day. When we work on a specific application, we define the goals for the product and design the best way to achieve them. My favorite part is the feeling of team spirit that drives our culture of innovation and persistence. It always gets us over the finish line and regardless of any project’s complexities, we’ve always successfully delivered.

What advice would you give a young student considering a career in sustainable technology?

There are a lot of prospective areas right now to look at within sustainable tech. It could be Machine Learning, Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, Cloud Engineering, Renewable Energy, Electric Grid Management, etc. It can be hard to make a choice in a world that changes so fast and has so many innovations happening at the same time. In my opinion, the right professional choice is always driven by the desire to make this world a better place.
