Top 10 States for LEED Green Building in 2018

All across America, states are enacting their own new green building regulations and incentives to move the construction and real estate industry into the 21st Century. Some are making more progress than others. Illinois leads the way with 5.31 green square feet of space per capita, according to the US Green Building Council.

While the Prairie State may lead in per capita rankings, population power houses Texas and California are catching up quickly. In 2018, the Lone State certified 277 LEED projects, more than 100 projects compared to Illinois. California nearly doubled Texas’ certifications with a whopping 521 projects, totaling 112 million square feet. Together, the top 10 states, which are home to 128 million Americans, have certified a total of 2,886 projects, spanning over 615 million gross square feet.

That means these states are saving money for families, businesses, and taxpayers while reducing carbon and creating a more sustainable environment. Investors are happy too. With faster lease up rates, better retention rates, and higher resale values, LEED ratings rapid adoption across the United States is one of the most effective tools for incentivizing carbon reduction.
