2018 Green Building Certifications Increased 49%

Building owners and managers are going out of their way to certify their properties as a green building. Urban Land Institute’s Greenprint Performance Report, tracking sustainability projects across the globe, reported that 442 green building certifications were achieved in 21 countries, up 49% from the 297 certifications reported in 2017. As sustainability becomes more important, a myriad of certifications have been established. But which ones are taking root?

In North America, LEED certifications and ratings are still the most common. With LEED leading the way, North American properties achieved 69% of all green certifications last year, the most of any global region. One of the main reasons LEED certifications continue to be so important is the fact they’re being constantly updated and improved. Currently LEED standards are on version 4.1, the boldest and most inclusive standards yet.

To meet those standards, buildings are investing more in sustainability projects like high-efficiency lighting enhancements, building automation systems and new mechanical units. If we are to meet our climate goals, our efforts will need to evolve along with sustainability certifications around the globe.
